September 16, 2024 – Norristown, PA — Senator Amanda Cappelletti (D-Montgomery/Delaware) is pleased to announce that the Norristown Area School District has been awarded an $84,067 grant as part of Pennsylvania’s Environmental Repair Grants program.
This funding, spearheaded by Governor Josh Shapiro and Secretary of Education Dr. Khalid N. Mumin, aims to create safer learning environments by eliminating environmental hazards such as lead, mold, asbestos, and other contaminants in school facilities. The grant is part of a statewide initiative, which will provide a total of $7.9 million to 109 Pennsylvania school districts, career and technical education centers (CTCs), and charter schools. These funds will help schools address critical infrastructure needs and ensure that every student has a safe and healthy environment in which to learn and grow.
“Investing in the safety of our school facilities is critical to providing our students with the environment they need to thrive,” said Senator Cappelletti. “This grant will help Norristown Area School District make essential repairs that prioritize the health and safety of students, teachers, and staff. I am proud to support this effort to build safer and more resilient schools in our community.”
The Environmental Repair Grants program is part of Governor Shapiro’s broader efforts to secure sustainable funding for school infrastructure improvements. In his first two budget addresses, Governor Shapiro committed to eliminating environmental hazards in schools and secured $75 million for this program in the 2023-2024 state budget. Norristown Area School District will use this grant to address repairs that reduce contamination, improve water quality, and remediate harmful substances like lead and asbestos.
“Every student, teacher, and staff member deserve to be in a safe, healthy environment where they can focus on learning and teaching without the dangers of asbestos or structural issues,” said State Representative Greg Scott, D-Montgomery. “This critical funding for Norristown Area School District reflects our commitment to making meaningful investments in our schools, ensuring that they are places where our children can thrive. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made, and I’m grateful to the Shapiro Administration for prioritizing the safety and well-being of our kids.”
