Harrisburg – July 1, 2026 – Senator Cappelletti (D-17, Delaware/Montgomery) released the following statement following the Senate Republican Leadership’s decision to recess the Senate on June 30, 2026 without a 2026-2027 state budget deal:
“Senate Republicans voted to send us home yesterday, despite our constitutionally mandated June 30 state budget deadline. I voted against this recess alongside my Pennsylvania Senate Democratic colleagues, because promising a budget “in the days following July 4th” is simply not good enough.
The budget deadline has now passed. Our communities elected us, as legislators, to serve and deliver timely results, not play games with tangible, lifeline funding so one party can score some abstract political points. While the House passed a budget—with bipartisan support—in April, the Senate has yet to even vote on a budget bill.
My Democratic colleagues and I will continue to fight to do right by our communities. We are ready, willing, and able to pass a comprehensive budget that sustainably funds our childcare providers, public transit, schools, county services, and all of the necessary entities that keep this Commonwealth thriving.
