Internship Program

Interning for a state senator is an excellent way to learn about the legislative process, state government, and constituent services. The office of Senator Amanda M. Cappelletti is committed to serving the people of Pennsylvania and advancing meaningful policies for our community. In an effort to increase civic education, provide young people with work experience opportunities in state government, and engage with our community, we offer the following internship programs available throughout the year.

Summer Internship Program

Application window:
March 20 to April 20

Our Summer intern program focuses on opportunities with the Communications and Constituents Services Departments in our office. In our Summer Internship program, we do not accept Legislative Intern Applications.

Fall Internship Program

Application window:
July 20 to August 20

Our Fall intern program focuses on opportunities with the Communications and Legislative Departments in our office. In our Fall Internship program, we do not accept Constituent Services Intern Applications.

Spring Internship Program

Legislative Internship

Position Overview:

Policy/Legal interns will support the work of Senator Cappelletti’s legislative team by assisting in policy development and research, preparation for legislative session, compiling stakeholder feedback on legislation, and writing a policy paper. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience at the intersection of state government, public policy, and civic engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct legal research on emerging issues that are of interest to the legislative team.
  • Draft policy briefs, talking points, and memos for legislative staff and the Senator.
  • Assist with tracking legislation and attending relevant committee hearings or briefings on behalf of the Senator.
  • Participate in meetings with stakeholders, advocacy groups, and government agencies.
  • Complete a policy research project at the direction of the Legislative team on a policy issue that is relevant to the student.

Qualifications:

  • Current or rising college junior or senior, or JD, MPA, MPP, or related graduate program.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Interest in public service, Pennsylvania state government, and progressive policy.
  • Strong research and policy analysis skills.
  • Familiarity with Pennsylvania legislative process or a strong interest in learning.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general office technology.

  • This internship may include evening or weekend work to attend certain events.
Communications Internship

We are looking for a highly motivated Communications Intern to join our team. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in political communications, with a focus on social media, writing press materials, and speechwriting. Graphic design experience is preferred, as you’ll help create compelling visuals to amplify our message.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Social Media Management: Assist in managing the Senator’s social media presence, including content creation, monitoring engagement, and tracking analytics.
  • Press Materials: Help write press releases, statements, talking points, and other materials for the media.
  • Speechwriting: Support the drafting of speeches, talking points, and remarks for the Senator at public events.
  • Graphic Design: Assist in creating graphics, infographics, and other visual content for social media, websites, and public communications. Experience with Canva is a plus.
  • Research: Conduct research on policy issues, media trends, and public opinion to inform communications strategies.
  • Event Support: Help with promoting public events hosted by the office. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graphic Design Experience Preferred: Familiarity with Canva is preferred. You will be expected to assist with creating visual content.
  • Strong Writing Skills: Must be able to write clearly and concisely in various formats, from social media posts to speeches and press releases.
  • Social Media Savvy: Experience managing or contributing to social media accounts on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter/Threads/or Bluesky (personal accounts qualify).
  • Interest in Politics: A passion for public service and an interest in local or state politics is strongly encouraged.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to work quickly and accurately while adhering to deadlines.
  • Team Player: Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Communications, Political Science, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Previous internship or volunteer experience in communications, media, or political campaigns is a plus but not required.
  • Ability to work 15 hours per week with some remote flexibility.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), familiarity with social media platforms, and design tools.
Constituent Services Internship

The Constituent Services Intern plays a key support role in the Senator’ Cappelletti’s office by assisting with day-to-day communications with constituents and helping the district team address community concerns. This internship provides a hands-on opportunity to learn about public service, government operations, and community engagement through meaningful, service-oriented work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Answer phones and assist with incoming constituent inquiries via phone, email, and walk-ins.
  • Support the Constituent Services team in researching and responding to constituent issues, including inquiries related to state agencies and local services.
  • Assist in processing applications for commendations, proclamations, and constituent services.
  • Help maintain constituent files and update casework logs and databases.
  • Participate in small-scale research or outreach projects related to constituent priorities.
  • Attend and staff community events, town halls, and meetings as a representative of the Senator’s office.
  • Provide general office support, including data entry, mailings, and document preparation.
  • Monitor local news and community updates relevant to the district.
  • Support special projects or legislative outreach efforts as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Current student or recent graduate interested in public service, political science, communications, or a related field.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Friendly, professional demeanor with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general office technology.
  • Interest in state government, policy, and community engagement.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
